Violet, You’re Turning Violet, Violet!

blueberries violetHappy New Year! Perhaps you overindulged a bit during the holidays (no judgements here), and made a resolution to start eating healthier. Well, in the case of this week’s spotlighted produce, the healthy route also happens to be the easy route. Our frozen blueberries are the perfect winter snack—full of warm, sun-baked flavor.

That’s because Lagoner Farm, a fifth-generation family farm in Williamson, NY, harvested the blueberries at the peak of freshness, in late summer. The berries are then individually flash-frozen as quickly as possible (sometimes within hours of picking!), for easy defrosting at your convenience.

Wait, there’s more: While all blueberries are naturally high in antioxidants, frozen ones may actually be higher in the ever-important molecules than their fresh counterparts. Why? The freezing process disrupts the structure of the berry, making the antioxidants more readily available.

Frozen blueberries can be used the same as fresh ones, atop oatmeal or waffles, in smoothies, muffins, or pies. They also add a nice touch of summer to a salad. While the berries thaw quickly for munching, we recommend snacking on them straight from the freezer—it’s like popping a mini-sherbet into your mouth! Just watch that you don’t suffer the same fate as poor Violet Beauregarde. They’re that good!
