We are voting hands-down for the beet to be the official Valentine’s Day veggie. As a contender for this honor (which we invented), beets have it all. They are red, heart-healthy, sweet, and turn everything they touch pink. But most importantly, they give Cupid a run for his money in the love department. Beets were considered an aphrodisiac by the amorous Ancient Romans, wisely so because beets contain amino acids and minerals that increase the level of sex hormones and feelings of happiness.
Toss the box of chocolates out the window. Give your love a box of beets.
More reds are coming for a fully red spread: frozen tomato puree, frozen strawberries, pleasingly pink Amarosa potatoes, striking red cabbage, precious red cipollini onions, and festive red and green head lettuce.
